Awen' Indigenous Gathering Place

Inside Winnipeg's Growing Indigenous Design Scene

"As American architecture firms and institutions continue to grapple with inadequate levels of diversity and inclusion, Canadian groups are highlighting an increased willingness to highlight and support the work of Indigenous designers."

"A recent CBC article highlights the Brook McIlroy Indigenous Design Studio, a focus within the Winnipeg, Canada-based practice that engages with Indigenous communities and worldviews as a part of its overarching ethos. The firm, according to the architects, positions Indigenous designers to lead "co-creation teams with Canadian professionals whose families have come from all over the world," and has worked to nurture Indigenous design talent for over a decade."

We are pleased to announce the winners of Cool Gardens 2020 as follows:

Pipe Talks By Alexander Semegen and Rajat Verma from Calgary, Alberta
This proposal integrates a series of playful two-way talking tubes which encourage dialogue between friends and strangers, emphasizing the value of the park as a sphere for communication and conversation.

Putt Putt Plaza By Mike Light, Mark Johnson, and Tamara Marahj from Calgary, Alberta
The installation brings the joys of mini golf to the banks of the Red River. The cool, multi-toned blues of the putting green are meant to catch the eye of the visitor, asking them to slow down and reimagine the use of public space.

Storefront thanks all those who submitted to this year’s contest. We are looking forward to Cool Gardens 2021, and to celebrating the outdoors again with all of you in the new year.

Due to the ever-evolving and uncertain future of the Covid 19 pandemic, Storefront Manitoba and the curators of Cool Gardens have come to the difficult decision to cancel Cool Gardens 2020. To ensure the safety of our staff, contractors, artists, volunteers, and visitors, the following projects will not be realized, but will join past winners on the Cool Gardens website at

In accordance with the current Public Health Order in Manitoba and restrictions on public gatherings that are in place at this time, the MAA Council had approved amendments to the MAA By-Laws, which would enable this year’s AGM to be held by way of electronic means.

A virtual meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, July 30, 2020 from 12:00 Noon - 12:30 pm (CDT); and the GoToMeeting platform will enable members to connect in a variety of ways and also readily facilitate participation by out of province members, who might be interested in doing so.

Preference will be given to registered members (regarding of the principal place of practice) up until July 15th, following which all registrations will be accepted, for the remaining spots, on a first come, first serve basis.

2020 ExAC

At this time, the National Committee which administers the Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC) is still planning for the examination to proceed on November 2 & 3, 2020, as scheduled.

It is important that employers of interns, who wish to potentially sit for this year’s administration, be aware of the extended deadlines that have been established for the 2020 administration (in response to issues arising from the pandemic):

  • Registrations must be received no later than Noon on Friday, August 14, 2020;
  • Experience submissions that might be required to establish eligibility (for the 2800 hours required) to sit for the ExAC, must be received in the MAA office no later than 5:00 pm on Tuesday, September 15, 2020.

Any and all CERB Experience Summary Forms continue to require the original signatures of the intern, employer and mentor.

Given the uncertainty as to the requirements that might be in place under a Public Health Order by this September, relative to the restrictions that might apply on any particular course for both the actual round of golf and/or any dinner banquet following, the MAA has determined that it will forego this year’s tournament.

It is our sincere hope that when the date (and registration) for the MAA’s tournament in Fall of 2021 is released, that there will be a high level of interest from MAA members, who once again wish to participate.
