Design is everywhere and we interact with it daily. The study, creativity, rigour and critical thinking that is rooted in these designed objects, articles, visuals, spaces, and environment are often overlooked. The vision for this year’s festival is to expose the process and value of design to the general public to inspire and spark an appreciation for good design in the world around us.

The Winnipeg Design Festival is an initiative of Storefront MB.

Governor General's Medals in Architecture

Submissions deadline: 4:00 p.m. December 3, 2015

RAIC | Architecture Canada and the Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) are pleased to invite architects to participate in the competition for the 2016 Governor General’s Medals in Architecture.

The objective of the Governor General’s Medals in Architecture is to recognize and celebrate outstanding design in recently completed built projects by Canadian architects. The 2016 competition continues a tradition initiated by the Massey Medals in 1950, providing an important source of understanding of the nature of Canadian architecture and the regional, cultural and historic forces expressed in the built environment.

Projects built in and outside of Canada, completed between January 1, 2008 and September 1, 2015 and for which licensed/registered architects or Team of Architects who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and are licensed/registered with a Canadian Provincial or Territorial Jurisdiction and were the lead design architects, are eligible to be submitted.

Sustainability by Design

Friday October 2

A climate-changing world will soon stress all of our current systems — social, economic and environmental. How can we make design changes now in all three systems that anticipate these stresses? Sustainability planning that only reacts to changing conditions will always be too little, too late.

Presenter: Peter Denton
Time: 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
Place: McNally Robinson, 1120 Grant Ave.
Breakfast: Included
Cost: $15.00 (Thanks to our generous sponsor, the first 25 registrations are no charge!)

The deadline for submission: Monday, October 5, 2015 at 2:00pm CST

Three winning teams will be selected in the WARMING HUTS COMPETITION from submissions of designs for a warming hut or art installation to be located on the Red River Mutual River Trail located on the Assiniboine and Red Rivers in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The jury will be selecting the winning designs based on their creativity in use of materials, providing shelter, poetics of assembly and form, integration with the landscape, and ease of construction.
