Design is everywhere and we interact with it daily. The study, creativity, rigour and critical thinking that is rooted in these designed objects, articles, visuals, spaces, and environment are often overlooked. The vision for this year’s festival is to expose the process and value of design to the general public to inspire and spark an appreciation for good design in the world around us.

The Winnipeg Design Festival is an initiative of Storefront MB.

Energy Efficiency for Buildings

The new section, 9.36 of the National Building Code (NBC) sets out energy efficiency standards for the building envelope, drain water plumbing, and air tightness requirements for Part 9 buildings to name a few. These requirements do not apply to temporary buildings (including construction camps), farm buildings and unconditioned buildings. Energy efficiency requirements are a key part of Manitoba's Clean Energy Strategy and build on existing energy efficiency requirements in the existing Manitoba building, plumbing and energy codes.

The Regulation 52/2015 can be accessed at:

Governor General's Medals in Architecture

Submissions deadline: 4:00 p.m. December 3, 2015

RAIC | Architecture Canada and the Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) are pleased to invite architects to participate in the competition for the 2016 Governor General’s Medals in Architecture.

The objective of the Governor General’s Medals in Architecture is to recognize and celebrate outstanding design in recently completed built projects by Canadian architects. The 2016 competition continues a tradition initiated by the Massey Medals in 1950, providing an important source of understanding of the nature of Canadian architecture and the regional, cultural and historic forces expressed in the built environment.

Projects built in and outside of Canada, completed between January 1, 2008 and September 1, 2015 and for which licensed/registered architects or Team of Architects who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and are licensed/registered with a Canadian Provincial or Territorial Jurisdiction and were the lead design architects, are eligible to be submitted.

It’s soon time for the fall flogging classic. And time to take advantage of what will hopefully once again be a beautiful afternoon at Bridge’s Golf Course. The MAA will be using a Texas Scramble format, with no pre-determined handicaps; and, as has been the case for the past number of years, the only handicaps will be those which are self-imposed and identified in advance.

(Please reply to the MAA office by way of email: or phone: 925-4620)

Note: Since the course requires a guarantee, no refunds will be available for cancellations that are received anytime following Noon on Sept. 8th or for ‘no-shows’ (but replacements will be accepted).

The deadline for submission: Monday, October 5, 2015 at 2:00pm CST

Three winning teams will be selected in the WARMING HUTS COMPETITION from submissions of designs for a warming hut or art installation to be located on the Red River Mutual River Trail located on the Assiniboine and Red Rivers in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The jury will be selecting the winning designs based on their creativity in use of materials, providing shelter, poetics of assembly and form, integration with the landscape, and ease of construction.
