Season's Greetings!

The MAA Council and staff would like to extend sincere best wishes for the coming holiday season to all members and their families.

Please note that the MAA office will be closed at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, December 24, 2020 and will re-open on Tuesday, December 29, 2020. It will also close at 1:30 pm on Thursday, December 31, 2020 and re-open on January 4, 2021

MAA Digital Signatures

The MAA has been advised that the offices of Notarius are closed for an entire two week period and will re-open on January 4th, 2021.

Although it will not be processing any new requests for digital signatures during that entire period, it has advised that customer support teams will be providing a minimum guard service from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm (EST):

  • December 21st to 23rd; and
  • December 29th and 30th;

to respond to any emergencies that members who already have a digital signature may encounter.


Annual Membership Renewals

At its meeting on December 16, 2020, the MAA Council addressed the 2021 budget and set membership dues and fees for the coming year (all rates will continue to remain the same).

Invoices will be forwarded shortly and, in accordance with the MAA By-Laws, are payable by:

  • the last day of February, without penalty; OR
  • the last day of May (with penalty, in the case of some membership categories).

Payments may continue to be made by way of cheque, money order, bank draft or cash; or by way of credit card (Visa and Master Card only), through the online payment option that can be accessed through the ‘Online Payments’ button that is prominently featured on the homepage of the MAA website.


Annual Renewals of Certificates of Approval

Applications for renewal of all Certificates of Approval will be forwarded just prior to the new year; and will be sent by both regular mail and by way of email (to ensure receipt).

Completed applications must be submitted to the MAA office, with original signatures of all directors who are registered members of the MAA (and/or APEGM, in the case of Joint A/E Corporations), no later than May 31, 2021. Please note that should any changes be required to the information that is presently on file, relative to the directors, officers, shareholders and/or shareholdings, appropriate notification must be submitted to the MAA office and a revised application for renewal sent out.


MCE Deadline and Increased Penalties

The following is directed to registered and intern members who have mandatory continuing education requirements.

As members should know, the end of the MAA's six month grace period, that was implemented earlier this year by the MAA Council relative to the 2018/2020 cycle, is fast approaching on December 31, 2020. While jurisdictions elsewhere in Canada may have taken a slightly different approach (by extending the cycle deadline, for example), we understand that all will similarly require compliance no later than December 31, 2020.

Accordingly, all members who have a mandatory requirement for the 2018/2020 cycle (regardless of whether they are reporting to the MAA directly or have an equivalency and are reporting elsewhere) must demonstrate compliance no later than December 31, 2020. Those who fail to do so, and/or remain non-compliant, will be subject to the following penalties / action:

  1. pay a penalty of $500 + GST and demonstrate compliance within 45 days (February 14, 2021);
  2. pay the original penalty + an additional penalty of $1,000 + GST and demonstrate compliance within 45 days following (March 31, 2021); and
  3. referral to the Investigation Committee thereafter, for disciplinary action.

We would therefore encourage members who are reporting to the MAA, to ensure that their individual transcripts on the MAA’s website are brought up to date with all relevant activities logged by the December 31, 2020 end of the grace period. Please note that, provided your email address in your individual member’s listing on the MAA website is correct, you can retrieve both your username and your password (if necessary) through the website.


The AZ Awards

Open for submissions on January 4, 2021

The AZ Awards is acknowledged for its influence and significance within the global design and architecture sphere and is a unique opportunity for architects and designers to receive the international exposure and acknowledgement that their exceptional work deserves.

Entries are juried by a panel of internationally renowned practitioners in the areas of product design, architecture, landscape architecture and interiors.

Finalists and winners will be celebrated at the AZ Awards Gala in June 2021, and published in print and online.
